1. Attack and Re-set Drill Instructions
All you need is a Vector Ball, 3 cones, and your paddle.
This drill applies to many sports and life situations, but we’ll use Pickleball in our example.
The athlete gets in a ready position (baseline) with 3 cones placed to the athlete’s front. The placement of the 3 cones represents different shots.
- One cone is placed for a forehand
- One cone is placed for a backhand
- One cone is placed for a center volley
Each time Vector Ball bounces it will turn either red, green, or blue, and each color is assigned a shot.
- Red = forehand
- Green = backhand
- Blue = center volley
The coach stands in front of the athlete and bounces Vector Ball. With each bounce, the athlete immediately moves to the cone and executes the corresponding shot, then returns to the ready position.
Drill Multipliers
To increase difficulty and cognitive load in this drill:
A) The coach bounces Vector Ball before the athlete has completely reset, forcing them to maintain focus and concentration.
B) Add working memory. The drill is executed based on the previous Vector Ball bounce.
For example, the coach bounces Vector Ball and it turns green, but the athlete doesn’t move. The coach bounces again and it turns red. The athlete immediately moves to execute a backhand, because the previous bounce was green. The sequence continues with each new bounce.
And as always — go as fast as your brain can.
2. Benefits
This Vector Ball drill improves your eyes-to-brain-to-muscle coordination and incorporates footwork, agility, and actions relating to specific sports.
In sports like Pickleball, Tennis, Racquetball, or Squash, you are constantly reacting to a multi-level and dynamic environment. The “game” is blasting visual information at you like a firehose, and your ability to see and process that information is the difference between amateur and elite.
Cognitive Vision Training with Vector Ball helps you obtain elite.
