1. See Remember Catch Drill Instructions

All you need is a Vector Ball, a HECOstix, and 2 athletes.

Position two athletes about 10 feet apart. Athlete A holding a Vector Ball and athlete B holding a HECOstix. Simultaneously, athlete A bounce passes Vector Ball to athlete B, and athlete B tosses HECOstix to athlete A.

Each time Vector Ball hits the ground, as it is bounce passed, it will turn red, green, or blue. The Vector Ball color as it bounces is the visual cue for this drill.

First, athlete B, who just tossed HECOstix, must catch Vector Ball with the hand(s) that corresponds to the color (visual cue) when it bounced.

  • Green = Catch with Lefthand
  • Red = Catch with Righthand
  • Blue = Catch with Both hands

Second, athlete A, who just bounce passed Vector Ball, must catch HECOstix by the color (leg) that correspond to the color (visual cue) of Vector Ball from the previous exchange/bounce pass.

  • Green = Catch Green Leg
  • Red = Catch Red Leg
  • Blue = Catch Blue Leg

For example, let’s say Vector Ball turned red on the previous exchange/bounce pass, and athlete B is now holding Vector Ball, and athlete A is now holding HECOstix. Then let’s say Vector Ball, during this exchange, turns green.

  • Athlete B must catch HECOstix by the red leg, because that was the color (visual cue) from the previous exchange.
  • Athlete A must catch Vector Ball with his or her lefthand because that was the color (visual cue) from this exchange.

This is a fun and dynamic drill that can also be conducted competitively. For example, you could have multiple two person teams compete to see who can go the longest (most exchanges) without making a mistake.

Drill Multipliers

To increase difficulty and cognitive load to this drill:

  • A) Call out which hand must be used to catch HECOstix while tossing HECOstix (e.g., “right!”). Then he or she must catch the correct color (leg) based on the previous exchange/bounce pass, and catch HECOstix with the hand called out by the partner.
  • B) Athletes stand on one leg, adding the brain task of maintaining steady balance while focusing on catching Vector Ball and HECOstix with the correct hand/color.

And As Always – Go As Fast As Your Brain Can!
