1. Tap & Catch Drill Instructions:

All you need is a Vector Ball and 3 cones. This drill can be done using a table or the floor, etc. Anything you can set 3 cones on and bounce a Vector Ball.

A hard floor is always available so in this example we’ll use a floor.

Athlete kneels with 3 cones (red, green, blue) to their front. Each time Vector Ball strikes the floor it will turn either red, green, or blue. Athlete bounces Vector Ball, taps the corresponding cone, and catches Vector Ball before it bounces a second time. For example, athlete bounces Vector Ball, it turns blue, then the athlete taps the blue cone and catches Vector Ball before it hits the floor.

How many reps can you do in a row without making a mistake?

Drill Multipliers

To increase difficulty and cognitive load to this drill:

A) Incorporate a non-action visual cue by conducting the drill with 2 cones instead of 3. For example, remove the blue cone, and when Vector Ball turns blue, the athlete doesn’t tap any cones. This is more complicated than it sounds. Including a non-action command disrupts rhythm and requires an extra level of concentration.

B) Add working memory. This is done by executing the drill based on the previous Vector Ball bounce. For example, the athlete bounces Vector Ball and let’s say it turns green, but the athlete doesn’t tap any cones yet. Athlete bounces Vector Ball again and it’s red, and the athlete taps the green cone because the previous bounce (visual cue) was green. Athlete bounces Vector Ball again and it’s blue, and the athlete taps the red cone, because the previous bounce (visual cue) was red, and so on.

3. Let’s Go

We recommend about 5 minutes per session, and 2-3 times a week to achieve full benefits of Cognitive Vision Training with Vector Ball.

This drill can be done on the floor (as described), standing or seated behind a sturdy table, with a jump box, etc., anything you can set 3 cones on and bounce a Vector Ball. And you can easily work it in during your normal workout routines.
