1. Taylor Switch Drill Instructions

All you need is two Vector Balls or, one Vector Ball and one Tennis ball.

One Vector Ball and one Tennis ball:

Athlete stands holding a Vector Ball in one hand and a Tennis ball in the other. Then he or she bounces and catches both balls at the same time. Each time the Vector Ball bounces it will turn either red, green, or blue, and based on its color, the athlete must switch the hands they catch it with.

For example, if the Vector Ball turns red, the athlete must catch both balls with the opposite hand they threw it with.

Two Vector Balls:

Athlete stands holding a Vector Ball in each hand. Then he or she bounces and catches both Vector Balls at the same time. Each time a Vector Ball bounces it will turn either red, green, or blue, and based on its color, the athlete must switch the hands they catch it with.

For example, if one of the Vector Balls turns red, the athlete must catch both balls with the opposite hand they threw them with.

The two Vector Ball version of the Taylor Switch drill offers more visual cue options. For example, the cue to switch hands can be based on the color of either ball, just left, just right, or when the colors of both balls match.

Drill Multipliers

To increase difficulty and cognitive load to this drill:

A) Add an additional task (e.g., catch one of the balls between your legs). For example, let’s say the color cue for switching hands is red. In this drill variation you add blue as the cue to catch one of the balls between your legs.

  • Color Cue Red = Switch Hands
  • Color Cue Blue = Catch Between Your Legs

B) Add a working memory component. This is done by including the previous Vector Ball bounce color (cue) in determining what the athlete must do.

For example, if the athlete gets the same cue (back-to-back), he or she ignores the cue and does not execute the action.

This is more complicated than it sounds. Including an additional non-action command requires an extra level of concentration.

And as always – go as fast as your brain can!

2. Benefits

This Vector Ball drill improves your eyes-to-brain-to-muscle coordination and incorporates multiple levels of concentration and agility.

In sports like Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Tennis, and Pickleball, you are constantly reacting to a multi-level and dynamic environment. The “game” is blasting visual information at you like a firehose, and your ability to see and process that information is the difference between amateur and elite.

Cognitive Vision Training with Vector Ball helps you obtain elite.

  • Elite Visual Processing Speed
  • Elite Focus and Attention
  • Elite Reaction Time
  • Elite eyes-to-brain-to-muscle coordination

Don’t panic, train your brain. #BrainSweat
