- True agility is decision-based movement.
- True quickness isn’t just physical – It’s mental.
- Don’t panic, train your brain. #BrainSweat.
1. Catch It or Let It Go Drill Instructions:
All you need is a Vector Ball and a firm wall to throw it against.
Have the athlete stand perpendicular (right or left shoulder facing wall) and about 3 feet from the wall. Athlete turns their head and focuses on the wall and the athlete’s partner tosses Vector Ball firmly against the wall. You may be tempted to bounce it above your head, to make it easier, but try to bounce Vector Ball at eye level. Each time Vector Ball strikes the wall it will turn either red, green, or blue. The athlete must catch it, or NOT catch it, depending on color.
For example:
- Green = Catch
- Red = No Catch
- Blue = No Catch
Note: Regardless of if you are right-handed or left-handed, be sure to switch sides so that you work each side the same.
Drill Multipliers
To increase difficulty and cognitive load to this drill:
- A) Athlete moves closer to the wall after each successful rep, until their left or right foot is against the wall.
- B) Athlete stands on one leg, adding the brain task of maintaining steady balance while focusing on catching, or not catching Vector Ball.
And As Always – Go As Fast As Your Brain Can!
2. Benefits
This Vector Ball drill works on the fundamental cognitive skill of split-second GO/NO GO decisions.
In sports like Baseball, Softball, Cricket, Pickleball, or Tennis you are repeatedly in situations that require a decision to swing or not swing. And this decision must not only be made in a split second, but it must also be made regularly. The “game” is blasting visual information at you like a firehose, and your ability to see and process that information is the difference between amateur and elite.
Cognitive Vision Training with Vector Ball helps you obtain elite.
- Elite Visual Processing Speed
- Elite Focus and Attention
- Elite Reaction Time
- Elite Object Tracking
- Elite Hand-Eye Coordination
- Elite eyes to brain to muscle coordination
Don’t panic, train your brain. #BrainSweat
A decision is what you do after you consider the facts. And some decisions must be made in a split second. This is what the Grab It or Let It Go Drill is all about.
This applies to many sports and life situations, but we’ll use Baseball in our example.
See the visual cues:
- Pitcher’s delivery, grip, release, angle, ball spin, trajectory.
Process what they mean:
- Process, calculate, time, and choose your action.
Execute correct action:
- Take the pitch or swing with a vector to impact.
Train the executive functions of your brain to coordinate with your body.
