1. Vector Saccades Instructions:

All you need is a Vector Saccades kit and any wall to affix them.

Vector® Saccades – Alphanumeric

Horizontal Scanning Exercises:

Affix two alphanumeric saccade charts at eye level and approximately 6-8 feet apart. Center athlete where they can read both charts without moving their head. Athlete reads the first letter/number from the left chart followed by the first letter/number from the right chart, then second letter/number from left chart and so on. Athlete progresses as quickly and accurately as they can for 1 minute, reciting aloud each letter/number until time has expired. Track progress by recording how far the athlete was able to go in the time allotted.

Depth Scanning Exercises:

Affix one alphanumeric saccade chart at eye level and have the athlete hold the second chart. Position athlete so they cannot read both charts without refocusing. Athlete reads both charts aloud in the same fashion as above, and again without moving their head.

Vector® Saccades – Color/Shape

Note: color/shape images are unique and do not repeat within in the same chart. For example, there are 3 diamonds, but only one with the red part of the triangle pointing right.

Horizontal Scanning Exercises:

Affix two color/shape saccade charts at eye level and approximately 6-8 feet apart. Center athlete where they can read both charts without moving their head. Athlete reads the first color/shape then scans the other chart to find the identical color/shape. Athlete recites aloud the coordinates (letter and number) once they find the match and then moves to the next. Athlete progresses as quickly and accurately as they can for 1 minute. Track progress by recording how far the athlete was able to go in the time allotted.

Depth Scanning Exercises:

Affix one color/shape saccade chart at eye level and have the athlete hold the second chart. Position athlete so they cannot read both charts without refocusing. Athlete reads both charts in the same fashion as above, reciting aloud the coordinates (letter and number) once they find the match, and again without moving their head.

And As Always – Go As Fast As Your Brain Can!

2. Benefits

Good vision, particularly in the context of athletics, is a combination of several key components that allow an individual to process and respond to visual information effectively.

In fast moving sports like Pickleball, Hockey, Basketball, Lacross, Handball, or soccer you are constantly reacting to a multi-level and dynamic environment. The “game” is blasting visual information at you like a firehose, and your ability to see and process that information is the difference between amateur and elite.

Eye Exercise Drills with Vector Saccades helps you obtain elite.

  • Elite Scanning Speed
  • Elite Target Switching
  • Elite Tracking Accuracy
  • Elite Focus and Concentration Endurance

Don’t panic, train your brain. #BrainSweat

Saccades are rapid eye movements that shift the gaze from one point to another, allowing visual focus on different parts of a scene. Athletic vision goes beyond good eyesight—it involves dynamic, sport-specific visual skills that contribute to performance.

Scanning the environment:

Flicking your eyes between the ball, teammates, opponents, boundaries to create a real-time mental picture of the play.

Target Switching:

Point guard switches from defender to teammate cutting to the basket, deciding where to pass in a split second.

Tracking Fast Action:

Seeing the ball off the racket and tracking the ball’s trajectory, setting up your next move.

Cognitive Load:

Quick, accurate saccades reduce mental strain. If your eyes lag, your brain’s playing catch-up, and that can mean a missed shot or a lost point.

Train the executive functions of your brain to coordinate with your body.
